Secretary records, 1895-1928.

The Letterbooks consist of six volumes covering the years 1895 to 1919. This outgoing correspondence was usually signed by the Secretary or the Clerk of the Board of Trustees. The Letters Received are arranged alphabetically and many of the letters are from John Shaw Billings, Director of the New York Public Library, or from the architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings regarding the Central Building. The Subject Files consist of alphabetical files kept by the Secretary. Primary topics include members of the Board of Trustees, relations with the City of New York, and operations of the Circulation and Reference Departments of the Library.
